The British offered ... ( 4 months ago by radio53)
The British offered 500 17pdr conversion kits to the US Army that could have been fitted in the field but few were taken. I suspect that by the time the deliveries started the breakout from Normandy in July was taking place and the need lessened to some extent. However I have seen photographs of US Shermans with 17pdrs installed.

No, the US stuck to the idea of the TD throughout the war, and the idea of adopting a UK cannon was probably not well received, especially for a tank that was not supposed to challenge other tanks! To be fair the 17pndr on the Achilles/M10 worked wonderfully, as well as the latter 90mm on the M10.
In the end, while we find it hard to swallow, it is true that the Sherman didn't need to be a tank-killer while the Allies enjoyed Air Supremacy, ALL German tanks were doomed under a P47 or P38...
By late June 1944 ... ( 4 months ago by radio53)
By late June 1944 as the Normandy campaign stagnated to some extent most American armoured commanders knew what the TD concept really meant. It was at the end of the discarded with almost indecent haste and little regret. What was really needed was something with the Firefly's gun power and the armour of a Pershing M26. It did arrive but not until the closing stages of WWII in Europe so that the big M26 made little difference. The British rushed to Germany the Centurion tank

Centurion tank to Europe but arrived a few days too late to get into action. However by then the German armoured forces ceased to exist so I don't think much would have been learnt. I'd be wary of USAAF and RAF claims for tanks destroyed. Careful battle field study in Normandy showed that many claimed air kills were false and they often shot up the same tank many times over and made new claims! A factor often forgotten in Normandy was the anti-tank units of the infantry and of course the....
Infantry anti-tanks ... ( 4 months ago by radio53)
Infantry anti-tanks guns made-up many of the German tank losses. Even a well sighted 6pdr (57mm in US parlance and use) was a potent threat to a tank especially in the flanking position which they wer eoften placed. With the British APDS round it was a real thumper. Add to there the man-held bazookas and PIAT's then we see how wary tanks crews had to be. Last but not least was artillery. No tank crew could stand the stonking some tanks received from heavy divisional ARTY.

I must mention the fire support given by the Allied navies. On one a occasion a concentration of Tiger I's was detected. Very accurate naval gunfire lead by HMS Warspite with her 15" guns obliterated the Tigers. One must have made a direct hit as appartently the tank simply "disappeared". Unlucky!

I would like to see these pictures, considering that not even Hunnicutt has one in any of his books and he is the king of Sherman journalism. Truth of that matter is that the first Shermans with 76s had a muzzle brake that looked like 17lbr. That would be late 43. BTW, the 17lbr was offered to the US tank crews in Italy.

Nice vid I enjoyed watching its nice to see things in colour as black and white looks unreal. Great tribute to all the men who fought in the war.
The Sherman firefly ... ( 3 months ago by karthikspartan)
The Sherman firefly was equipped with a 17pounder British gun was powerful enough to destroy a Tiger in a single hit. but very few were fitted at the end of the war! Sherman's were cheap and easy to produce but the early models can't perform so good against the new panther's and tiger's due to its inability to pierce their amour... overall that Americans produced it in tens of thousands and fielded against a few hundreds of the Germans in which the numerical superiority won the war!

This is by far the most informed set of text comments I have ever read. Radio3, I checked out the comment about the Warspite and you were dead-on. Cool story. And how 'bout that jazz piano soundtrack? Swingin', baby.

I wonder how it stack up with the Pershing Tank? So far, the only real useful variant of the Sherman Tank are the Crocodile version, Priest mobile artillery platform and Calliope rocket launcher...

More than 55,000 Sherman tanks were produced, against just about 2,000 Tigers and 5,000 Panther german tanks.Numbers does mather in war.

The Shermans do look cool and all but they should've been made to easily battle german tanks. At least our forces used better tanks during the Korean War and latter wars such as the still Ongoing and Misguiged conflict in Iraq.

Shermans were used throughout Korea. Factually, the Shermans were used in greater numbers. Greater than the M-46 Patton.

I think I knew that they were used in Korea, but that sort of explains a lot IMO.
Shermans were the ... ( 1 month ago by blaze1099099)
Shermans were the wrkhorse of the allies throughout the war They were cheap, verstile, expendable, and as strong as they had to be they were outgunned by the german, tiger, stug, panther, panzer, etc vut the sherman numbers.
For those interested, the germans went crazy designing super heavy tanks at first they made tanks like the maus(About 2 times the size of a Tiger 1 and the biggest tank to ever be built)but then they designed 1000ton landkreuzer which would hav had 280mm naval guns fitted to it
