The ohm (symbol:
Ω) is the SI unit of electrical impedance or, in the direct current case, electrical resistance, named after Georg Ohm. //Wikipedia :) Enjoy!

The better (more efficient) your speakers are, the less amplifier power you need to achieve a given volume. Speakers such as d&b or Funktion One are very efficient.

This guy from Haiti ... ( 9 months ago by BboyElectrix)
This guy from Haiti should know that he is going to need a lot of power, a 36.4KW rig would take about 150 Amps of electrical supply at 120V, or 80 Amperes at 220V. A plug on the wall will not suffice. You will need a dedicated power supply system, based off of 100 amp power feeds from the electrical grid, or a very powerful generator. There are websites with forums that handle questions just like these. Perhaps he should look here for more info. Google it: PSW Sound Reinforcement Forums

to BboyElectrix, do you think 36K is about the correct power needed? In my mind 5,000 people will soak up a lot of power.

That's a bit like asking if a Rolls Royce is overpriced, or a Maserati. :-)
Yes, they're expensive, but there's a reason why they've been used at Notting Hill Carnival by almost every sound system for several years now.

In my mind that amount of power can be enough, although the efficiency of the speakers powered would play a huge role in how much power needed. That is another benefit of the horn loaded speakers you mentioned, as they are louder per watt of input than regular speakers. It also depends on the music type, (D&B will take more system than say, regular disco music) but the company he contracts should be able to help make sure the gear is what he needs.

instead of using the macrotech they should try using the CROWN XTI 4000...thats what i use. and for the high's use like a xti2000...the 4000 provides 1200 watts perside@ 4 ohms....what do u think J??
these days macro ... ( 9 months ago by jimwraith)
these days macro techs can be hard to come by, if you need a system this big you'd proberably be better off with a selection of qsc PL6's or some of the crown I-tech amps they tend to run cooler have much lower current draw and are about 1/4 of the weight of the macros or if you need something a little more cost effective the peavy 4080hz is as good a sub amp as you can get its heavier than the others but comes in at less than half the cost and chucks out 2040W a channel @ 4ohms
edit: two things ... ( 8 months ago by jimwraith)
edit: two things don't use the peavys had an ear with them and their shambles, get some second hand crest 9001's for sub or if you can get them (uk only as far as i know) get some void infinite 8'sor maybe FFA or qsc amps plus you'd proberably want horn loaded cabs all the way for a big crowd go for two way bass (kick cabs and subs) don't get 3600vz clip it and itl blow your drivers straight away for midtops mids 12" and a 2" CD horn maybe 4 a side horn loaded with a phase plug much better sound
