The riff in this ... ( 1 month ago by daviddelarge)
The riff in this song is in my humble opinion on of the most beautiful things ever written. Yes, it's simple, but that's what Bernard as a guitarist is so good at - simple figures that while not being 'technical' (ie. over-worked and wanky) perfectly encapsulate the mood of the song and Ian's lyrics. See also solo in Digital for brilliant example of this, and Disorder too I reckon.

Agreed, but New Order is a way better band, and they would have never been around if Ian didn't hang himself. I don't know what the band would have been if he stayed alive, but I am grateful that New Order is a band. End of story.

Good point. Simple, but emotional... not too "wanky." Nicely put David.

I wonder why Bernard's hair color changed when he fronted New Order. He seemed to have dark hair in Joy Division but progressively turned blonder.

if only ian had lived enough to perform in the states...it's a shame, although new order's rendition is awesome as well...that bass line is the bomb!

maybe he wanted to set himself apart from ian, and his dark persona/style, he wanted to show they had outgrown ian, and no longer "needed" him, i dunno, that's my opinion...

i dont agree NEW ORDER is a way better band, it'a a great band granted, but i don't think they turned out better after ian's death, not that they did not accomplish things, (they surely did), but joy division had more followers (in my humble opinion) than new order, and yet i love new order, but i always see them as a ligther version of joy division, but then they seemed to have evolved, cuz yes, in their earlier albums the pain and gloom was there too, i dunno, i still moan about ian's death.

Technique is a better album than any Joy Division album. Joy Division were good, but fuck me New Order have had some classics that stand the test of time. Being an Influencial band doesnt make you better. New Order have made more good records, compare both bands on that only, new order win.

I disagree - if you want to compare albums in terms of greatness (and influence is a credential when making comparisons), JD's "Closer" edges any New Order album. It's harrowing lyrics and isolated instruments create a sound that was both unique and haunting. It influenced a generation (really a highlight of the post-punk genre).
I do agree with you, however, that New Order's "Technique" is a truly astounding album, and is terribly underated. It's probably my favorite album by New order.

I think New Order is almost as influential as Joy Division. Both bands changed the sound of music with their own style and because of that, I'm at awed at these guys. Ian Curtis was special, but heck New Order showed me that the rest were as important. I consider Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris to be some of the most innovative people in pop music history.
