I have seen the comments about these animal experiments and I wonder if it has struck anybody else that many people are using this evidence in the same way Dr John Bowlby did to draw his own conclusions about the now discredited theory of 'maternal deprivation'?

All,
For those interested in human attachment theories got to say the human interpretation put on the results of these experiments by the narrator is a little out outdated. Modern research shows that small children do not necessarily seek out 'food' or 'security' but respond to the caregiver who is most 'sensitive' to their needs. This maybe the mother or father.

A heck of a blow to the Watsonian worldview, wasn't it- with regard to monkeys, at any rate.
I am intrigued that such a behaviour pattern would seem to be "hard-wired"- I've often wondered what evolutionary advantage it must have. :-)

In my opinion I have to say that through such experimentation the advancements of psychology would not be here today...and that for all those animal activists out there just go and watch the documentary Bulgaria's Forgotten children...that will make you think about those more close to you than animals.

I have to admit: without these experiments, psychology wouldn't have progressed so far. It's funny, some animal activists would qualify this as horrible but what about all the fucked up kids whose mothers are crack whores? What about these children who walk alone because nobody gives a shit about them? These activists wouldn't give a shit: they'd rather defend a cat than a child.

this experiment was cruel-you don't need to make animals suffer in order to learn that infants need motherly love. that should just be common sense. if one does not know that, then that person is an idiot.

Breaks my heart. I know that it was a long time ago and unethical experiments could be done in those days but do you really need to make these poor monkeys suffer like this to prove something so obvious? Of course this would happen. Harlow just wanted to put his pathetic ego on the map. But I guess you have to make your experiments show proof and be able to be replicated. Still doesn't sit right with me.

If everything in science was so intuitive, we wouldn't need to do experiments. All this blabber about common sense is hilarious, you people must not be scientists because of what little appreciation you have for a true scientist's work.

omg yes of course it's obvious now because we know it's true. The more recent generations grew up with a lot of this stuff fed to us subconciously but that is beeause it has been proved. You couldn't say it was obvious because it had never been tested. and they didnt know the effects, just that there would be effects.cruel, but doubtlessly important to psychology.

science is so unstinting in its thirst for absolute truth some things are better left unknown i agree that science has helped us with many things and for that it is great work but some things need not be dabbbled in science takes out all the color in life and turns everything into shades of grey the world is alive with miricals on its surface fuck harlow the real genius is professor terence mckenna why dont you all search him hes the real landmark
