Known amongst Friend and Foe as "The Terrible Ones" (Os Terriveis), this reputation was derived from operational successes and from its inception in 1975 until it's disbandment it was the most feared Unit by it's foes in Angola and South West Africa, and accounted for more enemy losses than any ot
her Unit of the South African Defence Force. 32-Battalion was probably the most controversial unit of the SADF and its story virtually the untold story of the SWA/ Namibian Border War - a war which took place against the back-drop of the Cold War and which was in fact anything but cold in Africa. Th
e battalion, which also became known as the most successful counter insurgency unit of the SADF, was comprised mainly of former FNLA and other anti-communist fighters from Angola who had sworn allegiance to the South African government. Together with their South African officers, these troops forged
a formidable battalion that became known as the best operational Battalion of the South African Defence Force -- if not one of the best in the world.

The 32nd Battalion were some bad motherfuckers. Their kill to loss ratio was astounding. The Cubans and FAPLA feared them. Several good books about the 32, but the real story may never be told

It's actually an interesting story, madbulgarian The Seleous Scouts who went to SA were formed up into 5 Reconnsaisance Commando.
I read accounts by Ken Flower, head of Rhodesian intelligence, and Peter Stiff who wrote many books on SA and Rhodesia who claimed that SA Recce were not only sent to Rhodesia for Bush Warfare training but were infact modeled after Rhodesian Special Forces. This doesn't detract from their accompl
ishemnts in any way! But this is what I read.

Ah yes those were the days...As a sapper i spent 3 months in Angola(Jamba) during my "diensplig" and had the great fortune of meeting "Dr Savimbi" The conditions and training they"UNITA" endured was remarkable..I even had the great privilege of spending a few days in Buffalo whilst negotiotians were going on in Jamba..Much respect to 32 Battalion. A staff & myself had to train Unita soldiers on battle encampments(trenches and bunkers,ap's and anti tanks placement and disarmmanment)

Including my brother who, along with several others, commandeered a truck and slipped over the border, not trusting Mugabe's promises to look after them. They were obviously more clued up than those white farmers who started calling him Uncle Bob at the time. Not any more I'm guessing.
