No. A single Tiger ... ( 1 year ago by DuffySAS)
No. A single Tiger tank commanded by Michael Whitthmann knocked 15 tanks in Normandy. He was only stopped by advancing into a town and being hit several times by Bazooka rounds. And like a Firefly crewman said, "No Allied soldier ever made a living from engaging tigers head on." Only the m26 pershing could compete with a Tiger on equal terms.

Yes, I know all about Wittman, I've played that Tank scenario many times in my "Panzer Commander" tank simulator game. I don't think it was 15 tanks, it was 15 armored vehicles including tanks. Anyway he was an extroidanary
tank commander. Still doesn't negate the fact that a Sherman "Firefly" with a British 17 pounder main gun could knock out a Tiger.

Im not saying it can't. But your first comment made the Tiger sound like it was powered by a Go-kart engine and that it just fell apart as soon as it rolled out of the factory.

Looking at the video it is quite obvious that it is a Tiger and a Russian T-34. The T-34 is the one smoking at the end of the video. Silly Rabbit the Tiger was designed for long range support which it did very well.

17 pounder vs a 88 .. wat a crock of shit..
the Sherman Firefly ... ( 1 year ago by Triton355)
the Sherman Firefly could easily take out the Tiger 1. Plus the Tiger was not able to keep up with the Sherman's speed and performance. The tiger had many problems as well. It could not cross many bridges in europe due to its sheer weight and size, and it was unreliable, and heavy. Tiger was a great tank, but you couldnt do much with it.

Half a foot lower and the shot would have gone straight into the tank. A lucky .50cal shot is enough to pierce if it hits perfectly in between the hull and turret.

And was the only allied tank apart from t34-85 that could tank out the tiger 1 with a shot before the pershing came around, any way the pershing came in soooo late it didn't realy make a big impact.
The shermans were ... ( 1 year ago by doodledah)
The shermans were pretty shit tanks at the time of d-day but the were fast and cheap to produce. thats what mattered. canadiens whern't in villers bocage, all tanks in brigade where distroyed, and a smart tanker like wittman, wouldn't of entered an infanry infested town without infantry surport with risk of being sorunded. *pant pant*

the firefly out proformed the tiger in firefly from the side or rear. And loads of people try and make out wittmans death to be far more glourious that it was,he took out an intire british armoured coloum out side villersbocage.

proven and is alot more likey that the stories speed , manufacturing speed and manoverability, although the tiger could of distroyed both the sherman from any angle and, such as: sorounded by canadian tanks, a firefly, bazookas. and retreated, later while fiding a good strong spot he was simply taken out by a british hawkr typhoon using anti tank missiles. not a glourios death but it has actuly been

It is not the size of the shell or how thick the armor that usually decides the outcome of a tank battle but quality of crew is almost always the deciding factor.
Hardly case closed. ... ( 1 year ago by Mcplkelly)
Hardly case closed. The Shermans were good tanks, equal to the Mark 4s and StugGs that made up the bulk of German armor until 1945. I mean in Normandy only 30% of German tanks were Panthers or Tigers while 70% were Mark4s and StuGs. The Sherman was not a Tiger or Panther, but it could defeat the more common German Armor types, and it was available in large enough numbers allow the allies to dictate campaigns while the Germans with less tanks could only respond.
Firefly's were ... ( 1 year ago by Mcplkelly)
Firefly's were indeed powerful tanks (armed with a gun slightly more powerful then the Panthers main gun no less) but lacked a High Explosive shell until after teh Normandy Campaign. Given allied tanks were more likely to encounter soft targets like light armored vehicles, infantry and AT guns, that was a pretty significant disadvantage. Regardless its still my favorite tank of WWII.

Well some luck as well. Joe Ekins, the guy who KOed 3 or 4 tigers with his firefly including possibly Witmans Tiger had never fired the gun before in battle. Given what he did it could hardly be attributed completely to crew experiance, especially since most firefly crews recieved their tanks at the last moment and had little time to train in them.
Wittmans tank was ... ( 1 year ago by jjhays36)
Wittmans tank was destroyed by Aircraft along with him in or near it in Eastern France. The crews manning Firefly's were previsouly in M4/Cromwell mix of 5 per platoon so they had plenty of experience with M4 hull/turret, just different bore and breech.

Im sorry, but a lone Superfly Tank can not blow up a Tiger I into pieces with one shot, but in actuality...no one really knows what Killed Wittmann. But I have to agree that Allied Air Power is what killed Wittmann, seeing is how his Tiger is blown to pieces and the Turret is upside down and a few feet away from the body of the tank.

According to the book Tiger Ace, He was taken out by a British Firefly. The damage can be explained by exploding ammunition and fuel. The Tiger was very vulnerable if hit in the rear or in the bogie wheels. I like a good argument. He sure knew how to use that tank though. Today a Tiger wouldn't last 2 minutes on a modern battle field. Amazing

I have and read the same book, but there are pics in another books that clearly shows Wittmanns's Tiger I and that there are no signs of a hit in the rear and yes, he knew how to fight, but I hate to say this...Wittmann is Over Rated and there were other Tiger Aces that destroyed more Allied Tanks (mainly russian) than Wittmann.

Really? What other book? Great Subject. He was still a pretty good tank man you have to admit.
