I need help with something. I'm thinking of getting this game, but I haven't played any of the MGS games in the series. I assume that if I just get it and play it without getting previous titles in the series, I will have no idea what is going on with the story. So, which older MGS games should I get to have a good sense of what's happening?

Personally I feel you should "save the best for last". In other words play the first three MGS games. AND THEN...Play MGS4. And you will better appreciate it. You won't regret it. That's what I did.

But since there are at least two MGS games with the same sequel number, but have different subtitles, (ex: MGS 2: Substance & MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS 3: Subsistence & MGS 3: Snake Eater, etc) then which of the two (or more) should I get for each sequel number?
