I was in the US Army 71-73, I think part of what he is saying is about how enlistment was a substitute for going to jail hence the "Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand" I know guys were told to go to the army or jail for offenses as minute as drinking liquor.

The problem with this song is that it's so misinterpreted!It has nothing to do with being an American is "better"!! And it disturbs me that many Americans STILL dont understand the message Springsteen was trying to send out through this song!? Bruce is a man of peace and love! It's about the feeling of being a patriot in a country that doesn't respresent things you can be proud of...
