Coast Guard Assists Grounded Sailing Vessel
Uploaded by: USCGD13
Video Description:
SEATTLE - The Coast Guard assisted four people on a sailing vessel that ran aground at the south end of Lopez Island, Wash. today.
Coast Guard Group Port Angeles received a call from the 36-foot sailing vessel, the Shekinech, that they had ran aground and needed assistance. A Coast Guard HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles and a Coast Guard 33-foot small response boat crew from Coast Gua
rd Station Bellingham also launched to the scene. Upon arrival the 33-foot small response boat pulled the Shekinech off of the rocks while the helicopter hovered in case of further complications. A commercial assitance vessel arrived at the scene and established a tow enroute Oak Harbor on Whid
bey Island, Wash. No injuries were reported.

At the beginning of the video the anchor can be seen full of sea weed. CQR/plow anchor. Anchor fouled w/weed when at lunch/napping or was deployed to stop drift. No ones fault but the operator/capt. It does have sails.

looks like they tried to sail under the Deception Pass Bridge. I lived on Whidbey for a long time. That route is not made for sail boats, the current is too strong, that is probably why they got stuck on the rocks. Its nice to see that they didnt get hurt and the boat was intact.

Possibly engine failure and then not enough time to put sails up. The anchor would have been of little use as those cliffs look pretty steep-to and so it would not have bitten until very close to shore, if at all.

Well done to the coastguard and somthing like that can happen to anyone even the most experienced among us.Yes its true that the skipper could have prevented this but s$#t happens and if we all learnt somthing from mistakes of both ourselves and others we can be a lot sharper. I think that the boat and crew were very lucky well done posting this video.. Thanks Derek
