No. This was explained in the video. I think you are hung up on the knife. It was made by several American shops the 1700's. George Washington was known to have a barlow knife. Mark Twain referred to a "real Barlow" in his Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in 1876. Barlows have long been gifts, treasured by young American boys.
The knife is mentioed to infer that he is now past childhood things and ready begin a new life as an adult. But, afraid he may not be able to stay.

Matty Groves is the American variant of Little Musgrave. I think the only relation to Shady Grove is that Matty Groves borrowed the tune.

it's impossible to trace all those old folk songs, but from what I understand Matty Groves is an old English tune with variants including Little Musgrave, which dates way back to the 1700s. Then Shady grove sort of evolved out of that and became it's own song entirely in America. But way back when none of these were written down the lyrics and melodies would always get changed and passed on over time. Either way this is a great version

I'm pretty positive Matty Groves is not an American song to begin with. and that Shady Grove borrowed the melody from Matty Groves, not the other way around. But all the old folk songs back then were borrowing and changing and getting passed on all the time. (and Matty Groves can be traced to as early as the 17th century)... either way, they are all great tunes - I love this melody.

No tune survives for the Little Musgrave and the earliest versions don't scan to Shady Grove, so I don't see why it didn't borrow the tune. As I had already mentioned, Matty Groves is the American VARIANT.
